Since food is one of our most important needs, preservation processes have been used to help keep food from going bad. Food storage preservation techniques include freezing and refrigerating, canning, dehydrating, salting, pickling, and freeze drying.</p>
<p>Proper food storage preservation is important because it can extend the life of foods. When not properly preserved, food and beverages can go bad quickly and go to waste. Food preservation is a process which either kills the bacteria in food or slows down the bacteria so that it does not spoil the food as quickly.<span id="more-274"></span></p>
<p>Refrigerating and freezing are two of the most common ways to preserve food. When food is put in the freezer the bacteria is frozen and cannot spoil the food. When food is put in the refrigerator disease causing bacteria are slowed down so that the food does not spoil as fast. When milk is left on the counter at room temperature, it goes bad within a few hours. But when placed in the refrigerator the bacteria in the milk are slowed down. This gives the milk a much longer shelf life.</p>
<p>People have canned food since around 1825. Canned food makes great <a href="http://tomorrowsharvest.com/"><strong>food storage</strong></a> because it last for quite a long time. When food is canned, it is first boiled to kill off all of the bacteria. It is then quickly canned to keep other bacteria out. Canning is a great food preservation technique but it does alter the food. Since it is boiled, the taste, texture, and nutritional value change.</p>
<p>Dehydrated foods include powdered milk, dried meat, dried vegetables like sun dried tomatoes, and so on. Dehydrating often alters food to the point where a new product is created&#8211;like beef being turned into beef jerky. Dehydrated food is popular for food storage because it last for an incredibly long time without going bad.</p>
<p>Pickling and salting are also common ways to preserve food. The process of pickling uses salt and acid to preserve food and stave off bacteria. A bath of acid is not a hospitable environment for disease causing bacteria. Pickling was once used to preserve all types of items for food storage purposes, but today it is generally only used to turn cucumbers into pickles.  Salting meat is a popular process because meat can last for years if salted correctly. Salt draws out the moisture in meat and kills bacteria.</p>
<p>Freeze drying is a popular food storage preservation technique because it does not alter the food like other processes do. It leaves the food in a state of suspended animation and when reconstituted the food gains back its original taste, aromas, textures, and nutritional content. During the freeze drying process most of the water in the food is removed. This is what keeps the food from spoiling. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I love Mexican food, but it can be unhealthy made with full fat cheeses, fried tortillas, and fatty ground beef. A much better alternative is an easy to make a healthy Mexican chicken recipe, which is versatile and can be prepared to your tastes.</p>
<p>The main ingredients are chicken breasts, taco seasoning, a can of chicken broth, and a jar of salsa- whichever type you like best. You can layer those four ingredients in the crock pot before you leave for work in the morning, set it to low, and when you come home you’ll be greeted by an awesome aroma that will make you want to eat dinner right away.</p>
<p>I usually pull out the breasts and pour a cup or two of the broth into a gravy boat to use over top of the chicken. Then, I add a cup or two of instant brown rice to the crock-pot and turn it to high. You can also add a can of sweet corn or black beans at this point, and let it cook for about 20 minutes or so, until the rice is the consistency you like.</p>
<p>Serve the breasts whole or shredded- your preference, with the salsa broth mixture to top. You can also top the chicken with shredded cheddar cheese and low fat sour cream for an authentic, but healthy Mexican meal.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For all the guys out there that consider themselves “grill masters”, you can move on to the next article.  For the rest of you who would like to know how to grill better and easier, I hope this will help.  Whether you use a simple portable <strong>propane grill</strong> or a heavy-duty <a href="http://epropanegrills.com/commercial-grill/">commercial grill</a>, there are some techniques that make all types of grilling easier.</p>
<p>There is no right or wrong way to grill; the right way to grill is what works best for you, and the only way to get good at grilling is to practice.  We often wonder when we go out to dinner why our food isn’t as tender and juicy as that we get in a restaurant; if you grilled as often as a professional chef, your food would be just as good.  Practice makes perfect.</p>
<p>It is critical you start with a clean grill; there is nothing worse than grilling a beautiful steak and having it taste like the tuna steak you grilled last week.  The time to clean the grill surface is right after you finish cooking on it; use a wire brush to remove all the residue while the grill is still warm and it will release easily.  If you wait until it is time to start cooking again, some of the scrapings can fall into the flames and cause flare-ups.  Before heating the grill, brush it with a little oil or spray it with non-stick cooking spray; this is especially important if you are grilling fish or using a sugary basting sauce.</p>
<p>It is also vital to preheat the grill; many of us with gas grills neglect to do this and turn the grill on just before we need to start cooking.  Preheat the grill for fifteen to thirty minutes prior to cooking, this allows for even cooking.  Make sure all your cooking utensils are clean and ready and any seasonings and basting sauces are prepared and standing by.</p>
<p>I suppose the next most common question is about grilling times; how long should I cook it and how can I tell if it’s done?  There are general guidelines you can go by, but it really comes down to experience and touch.  Follow the guides in your favorite cookbook in the beginning, but begin touching the food at different intervals to get a feel for firmness and texture.  A <a href="http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&amp;node=289810">meat thermometer</a> comes in very handy when grilling, especially chicken; undercooked chicken can be dangerous.  Don’t forget the meat will continue to cook once you remove it from the grill to rest, so you may want to take it off just shy of your target temperature so you don’t overcook it.</p>

<p>See, if I want a stunning piece of grilled chicken I&#8217;ll start with a good, free-range chicken breast, which I&#8217;ll vacuum seal into a pack with some butter, some thyme, maybe some lemon or lime juice. (liquids are tricky in vacuum sealing, but you can get a little bit in there by rubbing it on). Then I&#8217;ll stick it in my water bath, and set it to sixty-one degrees centigrade / 141 Fahrenheit for a few hours.</p>

<p>Whenever I&#8217;m ready to cook &#8211; and I can hold the chicken at that temperature for a few hours, so it waits for me &#8211; I&#8217;ll just remove it from the sous-vide bag and stick it on a smoking-hot grill pan for about a minute either side, to char it a bit and get the beautiful flavours from the grilling going on the surface. Then, I&#8217;ll serve it. And that&#8217;s it.</p>
