Are Protein Supplements Necessary to Gain Muscle Quickly?
Posted by: admin / Category: Healthy FoodsThere’s a common belief in the world of body sculpting that a serious weightlifter must take protein supplements if he or she wants to compete or see meaningful results quickly. And while it is true that weight lifting supplements help, they aren’t completely necessary.
First, let’s talk about how a protein supplement works in the first place. At their most basic level, protein supplements are just a fairly pure, dense source of easily-digestible protein for the human body. And this is why most people think they are effective for building muscle: pure protein, unhindered by other ingredients and allowed to do its work directly with your muscles.
But the fact is, that’s only part of what makes protein shakes and bars effective tools in building muscle. The feature that is even more important is the speed at which they can be consumed. You can mix and drink a protein shake within five minutes of working out, which means you can very easily provide your muscles with the nutrients they need when they really need them: within an hour of pumping iron.
So if the speed of consumption and digestion is the main benefit of protein supplements, do you really need them in order to quickly gain weight in the form of muscle? The answer is no. You just need to make sure you have some other form of protein available, probably in the form of a high-protein meal, to eat as soon as you finish working out.
And this is an important task to remember to prepare for. If you’re not taking protein supplements, be sure to prepare yourself a meal before working out; that way as soon as you finish (or right after you shower), you can get those foods into your stomach — and the protein into your muscles — without missing that magic hour-long window.
